Well. Context is important.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A TYPICAL CLASS
in the practice hall ( dojo )
rei | bowing
In Japanese culture, we bow to show a sign of respect, trust and gratitude.
At the start and end of class, this would be from kneeling position facing Sensei ( your instructor) and normally in rank order.
During class, this would be a standing bow.
Warm up exercises
This is where Sensei or Sempai (Senior Student) will go through warm up drills.
These may be where you follow the instruction or paired exercises.
KIHON - The Basics - are often done here as part of your warm up.
Instruction
Sensei will demonstrate a technique and cover the main points whilst you watch. The same technique may be demonstrated several times and from different angles.
At this stage, don't worry too much about the names of the technique. Watch sensei's feet, his body movement and then watch his hands.
Partner Up and Practice
Jujutsu is practiced with a partner and it's important to work at your partners level.
The way you practice is to work with your partner, rather than compete with them. At this stage of learning, going too fast, too strong without control can cause serious injury.
So, you both take turns in attacking and doing the technique
Sensei make call to "change partner". This is so you learn with someone of different physical attributes and skill level.
Correction during practice
Sensei will work the room and offer instruction on an individual basis.
When corrected or advised by Sensei, a standing bow to sensei is done to show your gratitude.
SENSEI will cover maybe 3 or 4 techniques in the session with the same format: Demonstrate, Q&A, then paired practice.
End of class
Like the beginning of class, there is a formal kneeling bow at the end.
